Consumer Price Index (CPI), September 2009

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of September 2009 recorded an increase of 1.5% and stands at 168.5.  This follows an increase of 1.5% in August 2009 and minor increase of 0.026% in July 2009.

Foreign Trade Statistics, Second Quarter (April - June 2009)

Foreign Trade Statistics for June Quarter 2009 recorded a Trade Deficit of T$68.5 million.  This was the result of excess Imports of T$70.6 million over Exports (including Re-exports) of T$2.0 million.

Balance of Payments, December Quarter 2008

Tonga experienced a trade account (fob) deficit of T$67.7 million an increased by 2.5% when compared to deficit T$66.1 million in the same quarter of 2007 and decreased by 14.8% compared to the previous quarter.  Tonga earned T$4.7 million from exports in December Quarter 2008 and increased by 6.8% compared to exports of the same Quarter of 2007 and also increased by 15.5% compared to exports of the previous Quarter.  Major exports were pumpkins, root crops, fish product, paints and varnishes and scrap metals.

GDP by Industry - Fiscal year 2003-04

The changes of the benchmarks and base-year prices have also changed the levels and trends of each component of GDP estimated by the previous base-year. However, Tonga has ended the fourth year (2003-04) of the new millennium with a lowest real GDP growth of 1.4% since the strong growth of 5.6% in 1999-2000 and the negative growth of 3.2% in 1996-97.

Statistical Abstract - 2006

The Statistics Department is currently releasing Statistical Abstract 2006 which is the first of this new millennium and the eighth in the series, of which the previous one being the 1993 issue published in October 1993.  The Statistical Abstract 2006 presents various socio, economic facts and figures about the Kingdom up to the 2003/04 or 2004 in continuation of those published in the 1993 issue.

IMF - Tonga General Data Dissemination System

Tonga is pleased to announce its participation in the GDDS. Tonga’s Acting Government Statistician and GDDS-Coordinator, Mr. ‘Ata’ata M. Finau, noted that Tonga’s participation in the GDDS represents an important milestone in the development of the country’s statistical system. Such participation will pave the way for Tonga to produce and disseminate its official statistics in accordance with international guidelines. It will also support Tonga’s efforts to improve the quality of its official statistics.
