Agriculture in Vanuatu falls into three main categories. Firstly, the subsistence sector, which includes garden crops grown, and animals kept, mainly for the household's own consumption. Secondly, the small holding sector which compliments the subsistence sector and provides a second source of income. Thirdly, the plantation sector which began with the arrival of Europeans in the later half of the nineteenth century. Large areas of rich and fertile land were planted with coconut, cocoa and coffee.
The Census of Agriculture is a Government-sponsored large-scale operation for the collection and derivation of quantitative statistical information on the current structure of agriculture, using household as the unit of enumeration. The aim of the 2006 Agriculture Census is to provide up-to-date and reliable statistics on agriculture, fishing and forestry activities in Vanuatu. It will also help update the National Statistics Office (NSO) list of farming businesses for future agricultural surveys.
To date, the following reports have been produced based on completed outcomes of the different phases of the census.
