The Tonga Statistics Department has the pleasure in releasing the results of the national Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2009. The survey was conducted in four seperate phases, one each quarter over a 12 months throughout the course of 2009. Very detailed information on Household Income and Expenditure was collected from 1,983 households from all Island Divisions in each quarter, with the exception of Ongo Niua which was only covered in the second quarter.

The HIES results are being used within the Statistics Department to update the base period and weighting system for the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and to provide valuable statistical information on the household sector for the country's National Accounts Estimates and also with a hope that the HIES results provide useful information for planners, policy makers and the general public.
