Many fishers will concede that improved fishing gear is making fishing more efficient where more fish is being caught and leaving too few behind. But while fishing is becoming more efficient in some ways, it is getting harder overall as fish stocks are increasingly and continuing to decline, resulting in fishers having to go further, spend more time out at sea and more money on fuel, and still catch less. This week’s talanoa will highlight how fishing practices have changed, and how some of these practices cause harm and have increased overfishing for important food fish species. Our Guests were : Ledua Tupou – Resource Committee (Naisavuti Village, Tuvuca, Lau), and Susana Yalikanacea – Resource rep - Tarukua, Cicia, Lau.
