When natural disasters strike, communities need to come together to find solutions to keep their people fed and money in their pockets. The impacts from the 2009 king tide are still shared some New Ireland communities. Some communities lost their main source of income, like Tench Island. The community of Tench Island, a tiny island between Kavieng and Murat, came together and found a solution after losing their main income of selling coconuts as the coconut trees died after the king tide. By managing their fishing ground they now have good sizes of rainbow runners, yellow fins, trevally, and parrotfish, and other different species of fish to sell. Here is their story, told by Matthew Mark.
