Climate Change Flagship

About the Climate Change Flagship

The Pacific Community (SPC) plays a critical role in supporting Pacific Island countries and territories in their climate action efforts. By leveraging its expertise and resources, SPC aims to align its capabilities with the ambitions and demands of its member countries.

Understanding that each Pacific Island countries and territories has unique circumstances and needs, SPC emphasises the importance of customised support. Hence the Climate Change Flagship (CCF) is a mechanism that includes tailored approaches and solutions to effectively address the diverse challenges in all sustainable development sectors covered by SPC and faced by Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs).

The CCF aims to

  • Align SPC’s capabilities with the ambitions and demands of our member countries.
  • Strengthen internal collaboration, as well as partnerships with Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP) agencies and other stakeholders, to better support member needs.
  • Expand access to climate finance for the region, facilitating increased climate action.
  • Customise access and resource utilisation methods to better suit the unique circumstances of Pacific Island countries and territories.

With anchor investment support from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), this enabled the development and early implementation of the CCF to support the efforts of Pacific Island countries and territories to advance sustainable climate action and leverage additional climate finance. Subsequent additional leveraged funds from Denmark, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the United Kingdom, the Green Climate Fund, and the Adaptation Fund are supporting the advancement of climate action including through resourcing the Pacific Regional NDC Hub, building out the Digital Earth Pacific, developing a Loss and Damage envelop and country projects in Nature-based solutions, fisheries, water security amongst others.
