[CANCELLED] Ocean Science to Service Workshop

Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea

The Ocean Science to Service Workshop seeks to provide national ocean stakeholders with practical skills and knowledge in oceans and tides monitoring and prediction. Training will cover sector-specific ocean monitoring resources, tidal prediction tools, stakeholder engagement and service development.

Key objectives:

  1. Increase PNG national weather service (NWS) forecasters and climate staff awareness and understanding of ocean dynamics, available tools for accessing ocean data, and interpretation and application of ocean data for improved forecasts;

  2. Increase awareness of key local ocean stakeholders on available ocean data tools and products and the potential sector-specific applications of these tools and information;

  3. Identify opportunities to improve PNG NWS Services via facilitated multi-sectoral discussion on strengths and gaps;

  4. Introduce, test, and improve PNG NWS  draft ocean data and forecast product(s) for sector-specific use via PNG NWS ocean stakeholder consultation;

  5. Discussion and input into the PNG national ocean policy, facilitated by Pacific Community Centre for Ocean Science (PCCOS).

This workshop is being delivered through the Climate and Oceans Support Program in the Pacific (COSPPac), a program managed by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology through the support of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Since its inception in 2012, COSPPac has worked to build the capacity of Pacific Island Meteorological Services and other relevant agencies to understand and apply climate, ocean and sea level information for the benefit of island governments and communities.
