In a message to commemorate the International Day of Forests on 21 March, Inoke Ratukalou, Director of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) Land Resources Division, said that the day, which aims to celebrate and raise awareness on the importance of all types of forests as well as trees outside forests, had particular importance for the Pacific region.

Renewed commitment and strengthened partnerships for the Choiseul Integrated Climate Change Programme

Almost a year after the Choiseul Integrated Climate Change Programme (CHICCHAP) planning meeting in Choiseul Province, partners came together in Honiara for two days in February to plan for 2014. Participation by senior government officers at the meeting was a demonstration of the Solomon Island government’s commitment and continued support to the programme.

SPC and partners collaborate to develop integrated crop management strategies for sustainable food production

A regional research initiative is looking at innovative approaches to induce activators in plants to enhance their defences to fight off pests and diseases. The research is focusing on a mechanism by which an activator trips the plants’ own defensive shield. The research work being implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) with donor partners is part of an integrated effort to find sustainable pest management regimes for high value crops such as vegetables. Also under investigation is assessing biochemical activators where a plant under attack by pests and diseases sends out a sensory distress call for a cavalry of natural enemies to fight off the invaders.
