SPFSC data shows that a healthy number of girls in the Pacific are studying science. This is a huge achievement and stepping stone to closing the gender-balance gap in the science professions.
About the SPFSC Programme:
The South Pacific Form Seven Certificate (SPFSC) is the regional Year 13 qualification programme offered to Pacific Island Countries. This was first offered in 2004 to replace the New Zealand Bursary qualification that was used in many countries as the qualification to enter tertiary studies or secure employment. A total of 10 schools in Tonga, the Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Vanuatu adopted the programme in its first year. This first cohort tallied 473 students. Since then, the student numbers have grown steadily over the years, even after the withdrawal of two countries that developed their own national examinations. Last year, a total of 1122 students from Vanuatu, Kiribati and Tuvalu completed the SPFSC programme.
