Regional research agenda series: Meet our peer reviewers, Dr Maurice and Ms Judina

This month, we are very pleased to introduce two more exceptional peer reviewers from our team.

SPC LRD Peer reviewers

Dr Maurice Wong

Dr Maurice Wong is the Head of the Research Innovation Valuation Unit at the Agriculture Directorate Research Innovation Development Unit in Papeete, French Polynesia. With a PhD in Agronomic Science, Dr Wong specialises in agricultural research on the conservation and genetic diversity of staple food crops, roots and tubers, bananas, and fehi. His extensive research focuses on French Polynesia, where he has dedicated over five years to leading the Research, Innovation, and Valorisation Unit.

In his current role, Dr. Wong leads a large team, manages technical and scientific laboratories, and implements public agricultural policies and thematic projects. 

Impact

His contributions to the field are well-documented, with at least 15 published scientific papers on banana diversity, genetic mapping, virus control, orchid DNA remodelling, and phytochemistry. Dr Wong's expertise and leadership have made advancements in agricultural research in French Polynesia.

Ms Judina Lucy Duburiya

Ms Judina Lucy Duburiya is an Assistant Director for Agriculture at the Nauru Department of Environmental Management and Agriculture. Her research focuses on Nauru, where she excels in project management and farmer/community collaboration. Ms Duburiya has played a pivotal role in managing various agricultural projects, advocating for women and youth, and introducing new technologies in agriculture.

Recognised for her exceptional skills and dedication, Ms Duburiya was awarded the title of Department Productive Employee of the Year in 2016. 

Impact

With Ms Duburiya's responsibilities including initiating and implementing projects, working closely with government farm managers, and collaborating with community leaders and local farmers, her work and commitment have contributed to the advancement of agriculture in Nauru.
