Green News: Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction
More than 30 million people were displaced because of disasters in 2020 alone, and this number is likely to rise with the mounting severity and number of climate-related extreme events. In the Pacific region, over 50,000 people are displaced in the Pacific region every year due to climate events.
During the seventh session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (23-28 May), Vasiti Soko, Director of Fiji National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), stood up for Pacific Island countries and territories.
“In Fiji, we have over 40 communities that are needing to be relocated. Climate change adaptation measures need to be adhered to, (....) attending such a forum as this allows us to give a voice and voice of those other pacific island countries that are not here but are facing the same disasters that we are facing.”
