Green News: Discovery of the world’s largest coral in the Pacific

SPC

The largest coral ever recorded has been discovered in the southwest Pacific Ocean, near Solomon Islands. Measuring a massive 34 meters wide, it is estimated to be over 300 years old.

The Mega Coral, a species called Pavona clavus, was found by National Geographic Pristine Seas divers exploring the effects of climate change. Its discovery coincides with COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where global leaders, including Solomon Islands’ Climate Minister Trevor Manemahaga, are advocating for stronger climate action.

This awe-inspiring find offers hope and a reminder of the urgent need to safeguard our oceans as corals worldwide face mounting threats from warming seas and human activities.

Key aspects of this discovery include:

  • The coral's exceptional age and size distinguish its resilience in an increasingly vulnerable marine environment.
  • The deeper location may have protected it from the warmer temperatures affecting shallow reefs.
  • It highlights the Solomon Islands' dedication to protecting marine biodiversity amidst global climate challenges.

This discovery serves as a testament to the Pacific’s commitment to preserving essential marine ecosystems, with the hope that this resilient coral will inspire stronger conservation efforts worldwide.
