Fiji Government's Staff Skills bolstered by project management course

Thirty government officials completed a project management training in Fiji this month to bolster the country’s capacity to effectively manage project delivery.  The training week prepares the participants to begin an intensive 3-4 month course where graduates will qualify with a Certificate IV in Project Management Practice.

In many cases, small government teams manage delivery of a wide array of projects so this accredited course helps provide them with the skills and systems to manage a diverse set of competing projects from sectors such as forestry, education, environment, health, climate change & immigration.

USP Pacific TAFE Chief Executive Mr Hasmukh Lal said this initiative genuinely supports better project delivery “in order to provide better facilities and infrastructure to the people, the governments have a lot of pressure from tax payers, donors, development partners and investors to ensure the projects and funds invested are managed well”.

The need for increased support to manage the wide range of projects that small island states such as Fiji are implementing is critical to ensuring effective project delivery. 

SPC ISACC Project Manager Vuki Baudromo said “governance and effective management is critical to overcoming some of the region’s greatest challenges but we must support governments to gain these skills to ensure effective delivery of projects and this course helps support 30 government officials to do just that,” she said.

The course will now be run in two blocks with two academic courses delivery over face-to-face training periods followed by workshops design to contextualise the course and ensure students can apply this knowledge to their real world projects.

The training is being delivered by USP Pacific TAFE in partnership with the Fiji Government’s Ministry of Civil Service, and the Pacific Community (SPC) through its Institutional Strengthening in the Pacific Islands Countries to Adapt to Climate Change (ISACC) Project.  It is funded by USAID.

The training will also be rolled out in Samoa in 2019.

USAID ISACC Project:
The objective of the USAID ISACC Project is to strengthen the national institutional capacity of Pacific Islands Countries (PICs) to effectively plan, coordinate and respond to the adverse impacts of climate change and disaster risk by building on the capacity of local partners through appropriate partnerships, collaborations, training programs and on-going mentoring support as such. The 4-year USAID-funded project is currently being implemented in eight Pacific island countries including Fiji and Samoa.
