Definition Total growth rate. The rate at which a population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to natural increase and net migration, expressed as a percentage of the base population

Purpose/Rationale Reflects on the magnitude of growth over a specific time period, usually one year (i.e. described in annual rate of growth, %) Comparison with other growth rates, such as economic growth, easy indication of where country / society is heading in terms of development. Provides basis for calculation of population doubling time.
