Definition The rate at which a population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to a surplus (or deficit) of births over deaths, expressed as a percentage of base population.
Calculation/Formula [Births - deaths] / Total population x 100

Purpose/Rationale Describes the natural population growth in the absence of the effects of net-migration (usually calculated in annual rate %) attributable to births and deaths. Subtracting this value from overall population growth rate, provides indirect measure of international migration. INDISPENSABLE where no such information exists. Useful to cross-check migration information system data)
