The Pacific Community is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Miles Young as the Director of the Regional Rights Resource Team (RRRT) at the Pacific Community (SPC). His appointment will formally take effect on 28 March 2018.

Miles, born and raised in Fiji, has over 20 years of professional experience working as a legal development practitioner and private legal practitioner across the Pacific, Asia and Africa. He holds a Master of International Law degree from the  University of Sydney.

Miles joins SPC following his most recent roles as Senior Project Officer with the Office of Equity and Diversity at Western Sydney University in Australia, and as Regional Legal Consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Prior to that, he held the positions of Deputy Director of the Australian Government-funded Australia Indonesia Partnership for Justice (AIPJ) in Indonesia, General Manager and Company Secretary of International Christian Aid Relief Enterprises Limited (iCARE), Program Legal Counsel with the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) in Australia, and Manager of the Field Programs Unit at IDLO Headquarters in Italy. 

Miles has worked on a wide range of substantive areas, including access to justice and legal aid, education, legal and economic empowerment of communities, women’s rights and gender equality, constitution-making, judicial administration,  human rights, international trade law, agriculture, biosecurity, and pesticides. He has designed, managed, implemented and secured funding for complex and sensitive international development programmes and projects in the areas of rule of law, social justice and education.

RRRT was established as part of SPC in 1995, and has since been a pioneer in human rights capacity building, research, policy, and legal and technical assistance in the Pacific region. RRRT’s mission is to advance human rights and good governance standards for the sustainable and equitable development of the region and the benefit of all Pacific people.

Miles’s background and skills will position him well as he assumes the leadership of this important function at SPC.
Miles will be based at SPC’s Regional Office in Suva, Fiji.
