The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and representatives of Pacific Island countries and territories will be among those gathering in Japan for the 3rd United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. The conference aims to agree on a new post 2015 framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Pacific will be showcased as the first region in the world to fully integrate climate change and disaster risk management into a single overarching framework, the Strategy for Climate and Disaster Resilient Development in the Pacific.

A Side Event and Booth are being organised by SPC in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The side event, ‘Building Resilience to Disasters and Climate Change for Sustainable Development in the Pacific’ will:

  • Share progress made by the Pacific region in the development of the Strategy for Climate and Disaster Resilient Development in the Pacific and raise awareness of this new integrated strategy – a first of its kind; and
  • Share experiences in the development and implementation of integrated effective climate and disaster risk management approaches.
