About non-communicable diseases

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) – primarily heart disease, cancer, lung disease and diabetes – are the leading cause of death in the Pacific, with life expectancy declining in some Pacific Island countries as a result of NCD-related premature deaths.

In addition, there is a significant socio-economic burden placed on many Pacific Island countries and territories that are unable to provide essential medicines and services for preventing and caring for people with NCDs.

However, such diseases are linked to our behaviour (poor diets, lack of exercise, smoking and alcohol) so they are avoidable. Every one of us can take action, once we are aware of how dangerous such diseases are, by choosing behaviours that are good for our health and the health of our family and friends.

Photo competition

The Pacific Community (SPC) is holding an online photo competition entitled “Focus on NCDs in the Pacific”.

The competition is designed to raise awareness about the challenge non-communicable diseases are for people living in the Pacific and the role each person can play in preventing such disorders.

Entry is free and open to both amateurs and professional photographers. Anyone 16 years or younger who wishes to enter will have to obtain their parents’ permission before submitting their entry.
