48th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting begins in Apia, Samoa

The Pacific Community’s Director General, Dr Colin Tukuitonga, will be taking part in the 48th PIF Leaders Meeting this week in Apia, Samoa. The agenda for the week includes the Smaller Islands States Leaders Meeting; the Pacific ACP Leaders Meeting; the Official Opening of the 48th Pacific Islands Forum; the Forum Leaders Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations and Private Sector; the 48th PIF Plenary Sessions with Associate Member and Forum Observers and Post Forum Dialogue Partners; and the Forum Leaders Retreat.
Along with leaders from across the Pacific, this year’s meeting will also include the European Union (EU) Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, and EU Director General for International Cooperation, Pierre Amilhat.

Last year’s meeting saw the PIF Leaders focused on the challenges of Climate change with the endorsement of the ‘Framework for Resilient Development in the Pacific (FRDP)’ and the ‘Pohnpei Oceans Statement: A Course to Sustainability’. Leaders also discussed wide ranging issues of particular concern to the Pacific including, cervical cancer, gender, poverty, persons with disabilities and remittances.

Climate change and ocean resilience issues are once again expected to be top priorities for the 48th Leaders Meeting which will run through till Friday September 8.
