SPC-EU MPP Project WASH in schools programme

Suva

Safe drinking water and clean toilets are extremely important for children’s health and contribute to the prevention of hygiene-related communicable diseases like typhoid.

Clean, children-friendly water and sanitation facilities also improve attendance and learning outcomes for girls and boys. These outcomes are part of a Water, Sanitation And Hygiene (WASH) initiative being implemented in 34 primary schools in Fiji as part of the Pacific Community (SPC) Micro Projects Programme (MPP). The MPP programme is funded by the European Union (EU) and is working in 34 schools to repair WASH infrastructure damaged by Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016. The programme is also conducting training to advocate for improved WASH practices in schools. The training complements the ongoing refurbishment of toilets, hand washing and safe drinking facilities in 30 of the 34 schools.
