On 11 July 2018, the Pacific Community joined Climate Neutral Now, a coalition of climate neutral organisations under the auspices of the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
SPC pledged to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by any means necessary, and to compensate the inevitable emissions, thereby becoming GHG emission neutral – climate neutral – as part of its contribution to the global acceleration of transformative change needed globally.
Against this backdrop, the organisation:
- Measures its GHG emissions;
- Reduces GHG as much as possible by implementing necessary energy saving measures;
- Compensates any remaining emissions by offsetting them through Certified Emission Reductions.
SPC also committed to promote its efforts towards climate neutrality among its member countries and partners; as part of this campaign, SPC Deputy Director-General, Cameron Diver, participated to a COP24 side event alongside several other institutions who took similar pledges to achieve carbon neutrality at the institutional level. The event was recorded and can be viewed online.
An ongoing collaboration with the Bonn-headquartered UNFCCC Secretariat will allow to strengthen best practices with other institutions and keep identifying innovative opportunities to pursue similar efforts towards carbon neutrality.
