The Pacific has one of the world's lowest capacities in ocean science

23/07/2019 By Vishaal Kumar, Fiji Times

This was relayed by Pacific Community (SPC) Deputy Director General, Cameron Diver while speaking at the SPC Workshop on the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 at Nouméa in New Caledonia today.

Mr Diver said the workshop gives the region the opportunity to start setting the global agenda on the science needed for the oceans we want.

He said it also provides opportunity to build science capacity around regional knowledge.

Mr Diver said the workshop was a platform for participants to determine the critical ocean science the region needed to address the scale of the challenge the region faced.

SPC copyright_Ocean Science.JPG"In numbers, the Pacific are custodians of 28 million square miles comparable to the entire continent of Africa, " Mr Diver said.

"This accounts for more than 20 per cent of the world's exclusive economic rights."

He said the first World Ocean Assessment Report showed the ocean's carrying capacity was near or at its limit.

The workshop continues today.

Vishaal Kumar’s story has been developed as part of the Pacific Community Workshop on the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030. This was made possible through SPC’s Australian funded Climate and Ocean Support Program in the Pacific (COSPPac). COSPPac works to help translate ocean science that is critical and relevant to the Pacific region to better inform evidence based decision making for our climate and oceans.
