Hot Off the Press: Food Systems in the Pacific

Suva

A bumper issue of the Pacific Community recently released publications list includes several publications related to food systems and diet in the Pacific.

The cross-SPC Food Systems Taskforce led the preparation of two publications that will help give voice to the Pacific’s position during the UN Food Systems Summit Dialogues. The first, Food Systems and the Pacific Region: Evidence Brief for the UN Food Systems Summit Dialogues, was prepared on behalf of the Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) ambassadors to the UN. A second related document, Advancing Blue Pacific Food Systems: Convenor Summary of the Pacific Regional Dialogue 2021 reviews the issues that emerged from the Blue Pacific Food Systems Dialogue sessions highlighting the formidable hurdles Pacific Island countries and territories face in realising equitable benefits from the global food system.

The Statistics for Development Division (SDD) produced a report on Food consumption in Solomon Islands: based on the analysis of the 2012/13 household income and expenditure survey, that found around one person in 10 is undernourished in that country. Two other food consumption reports from Kiribati and Marshall Islands will soon be released so look out for them. Earlier in the year SDD also published a guide on using the Pacific Nutrient Database, to enable the analysis of poverty, nutrition and food security in the Pacific region.
