Do you know what is ocean acidification?

Noumea

What is ocean acidification?Today starts the Ocean Acidification Week (13-17 Sept). Throughout the week, the Pacific Community Centre for Ocean Science (PCCOS) will highlight facts, research, and initiatives on ocean acidification.

Our global ocean absorbs approximately 30% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere. This CO2 combines with seawater to produce carbonic acid, turning the seawater more acidic. The addition of CO2 to the ocean from burning fossil fuels is making seawater more acidic (reducing its pH). We call this process “ocean acidification”.
