Green News: Pacific islanders produce 0.5 kg of household solid waste per person each day

Noumea

Pacific islanders produce 0.5 kg of household solid waste per person each day*.

Significant variations can be noticed between islands:

  • 0.1kg/person/day in Pohnpei;
  • 0.4kg/person/day in Fiji;
  • 1.2kg/person/day in French Polynesia, Southern New Caledonia and Vanuatu (Luganville).

While these figures can appear low, they do not reflect the complex reality of waste management in the region, where landfills often overflow due to the inability to recycle. What could be the most effective solutions to face this challenge?  Adopting the 3 Rs to reduce the amount of household waste: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
