Stat of the week: In French Polynesia, the installed renewable electricity-generating capacity increased by 43% between 2012 and 2022

Noumea

In French Polynesia, the installed renewable electricity-generating capacity increased by 43% between 2012 and 2022.

This growth, captured under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 7.b.1, has been driven mainly by a sharp expansion of solar energy, which has almost tripled over the decade. Today, renewable electricity generation is shared almost equally between solar and hydropower, reflecting a more diversified and resilient energy mix.

These trends highlight meaningful progress towards clean energy development, while continued investment will be essential to further reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and support a sustainable energy transition for Pacific communities.
