The 20 years of the healthy island journey

The Eleventh Pacific Health Ministers meeting has commenced on Yanuca Island, Fiji, today, at which the Pacific ministers will review progress over the past 20 years in health and chart the course for the years to come.

The first Pacific Health Ministers meeting in 1995 was also held on Yanuca Island, where ministers created a unifying Healthy Islands vision for Pacific island countries and areas.

SPC lends public health surveillance helping hand to Vanuatu

Three public health experts from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) will head to Port Vila and Pentecost Island this weekend to support Vanuatu’s Ministry of Health with the surveillance, diagnosis and response to diseases with epidemic potential and other public health emergencies.

SPC will initially deploy two epidemiologists and one laboratory specialist following a request from the Vanuatu Government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) for assistance over the next two months.

SPC stands by Pacific Communities to address tuberculosis challenge

World Tuberculosis Day reminds us all of the important work under way to eradicate this highly infectious and sometimes fatal disease, but also that more needs to be done to save lives across the Pacific and globally.

“We’ve achieved significant progress in the detection and treatment of tuberculosis cases in the Pacific region in recent years, but a renewed effort is essential to ‘reach, treat and cure everyone’,” according to a Tuberculosis Epidemiologist at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Jojo Merilles.

State of Pacific health to be reviewed in Fiji this week

Two decades after the Healthy Island Vision was born, senior health officials from 21 Pacific countries and territories will gather in Suva, Fiji, this week (18-19 February) to examine progress with its monitoring and implementation, and recommend next steps.

Participants at the Third Pacific Heads of Health Meeting will also review the Non-Communicable Diseases Roadmap and the post-2015 Pacific Health Agenda, and will consider a range of other issues, such as tobacco control, sugar-sweetened drinks, reducing the avoidable disease burden, and monitoring and evaluation.

Boosting Pacific health information with data for decision-making training

Public health surveillance and laboratory professionals from American Samoa, Cook Islands, Nauru, Niue, Tuvalu and Vanuatu came together in Noumea, New Caledonia, last week to participate in the first module of an accredited data for decision-making (DDM) training programme.

SPC helps Samoa with health surveillance for SIDS

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has mobilised a team of health surveillance specialists to help the Samoa Ministry of Health with public health surveillance at the 3rd International Conference of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

‘It is important to enhance surveillance to enable early warning of potential public health threats during mass gathering events such as the SIDS Conference, which will bring more than 3000 people from around the world to Samoa,’ said Dr Yvan Souarès, Deputy Director of SPC’s Public Health Division.
