Pacific NCD Surveillance and Operational Research Meeting

Noumea, New Caledonia, 6–8 February 2013

The Pacific NCD Surveillance and Operational Research meeting was held at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) headquarters in Noumea, New Caledonia, 6-8 February 2013. Representatives from Pacific Island countries and territories and key regional organisations attended the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to share information and discuss current NCD surveillance initiatives and frameworks in the Pacific region, and to discuss NCD surveillance and operational research needs and ways to address these needs.

Inform'ACTION 36 - PPHSN, Climate Change and Health

Last September, in Nadi (Fiji), WHO, SPC and the University of Fiji jointly organised the first Pacific Regional Climate Change and Health Symposium. We will publish the proceedings of this successful symposium in our next issue of Inform’ACTION (IA 37). However, we thought it right to dedicate half of this issue to this topic, as it is a matter of such importance to the health of Pacific Islands communities.

Surveillance and health protection: another success of the 11th Festival of Pacific Arts

Secretariat of the Pacific Community, Noumea, 24 August 2012Behind the scenes of the 11th Festival of Pacific Arts, health practitioners ran an innovative surveillance system to better protect the health of Honiara’s population, including artists and visitors, from infectious diseases and other potential public health hazards related to a large gathering of people.

The electronic system was designed to ensure rapid detection and prompt response to unusual public health events, such as outbreaks of infectious diseases, through the collection of syndromes (signs or symptoms indicating potential infectious diseases).

Pacific Regional Climate Change and Health Symposium, 13-15th September, 2012

With the support of the World Health Organization and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community

This Regional Symposium brought together health professionals, researchers and stakeholders across government and non-government sectors throughout the Pacific to discuss the climate change and health vulnerabilities of a range of Pacific island countries, share knowledge and experience of managing climate-sensitive health issues, and plan for effective adaptation strategies to avoid the most serious impacts of climate change on the health of Pacific island communities.
