In 2020, 39% of the rural population in Papua New Guinea used safely managed drinking water services (86% for the urban population).

This indicator tracks the proportion of the population that is using an improved drinking water source, that is:

  • located on the premises;
  • available when needed;
  • free of fecal and priority chemical contamination.

Improved drinking water sources include piped water, boreholes or tubewells, protected dug wells, protected springs, rainwater, and packaged or delivered water (United Nations).
