In an era marked by growing environmental concerns and the pressing need for sustainable energy solutions, the Pacific Community's (SPC) Pacific Adoption of Waste-to-Energy Solutions (PAWES) project is stepping up its efforts to catalyse change across the region. A capacity-building workshop in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on the 14th of September 2023, is a testament to their commitment to fostering evidence-based decision-making on waste-to-energy solutions.
The workshop drew participation from key stakeholders, including the Conservation and Environment Protection Agency, the Climate Change and Development Authority, the National Energy Authority, and the National Capital District Commission, centred around three pivotal areas crucial for informed decision-making in Papua New Guinea's waste-to-energy landscape.
A highlight of the workshop was the presentation of case studies critiquing examples of Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technologies used in two countries in the Pacific. These real-world examples shed light on the need to drive evidence-based decision-making on Waste-to-Energy solutions that are fit for purpose for each country's waste and energy needs.
The development of national WtE plans took centre stage, aligning with existing solid waste management and renewable energy policies. This critical step underscores the importance of a holistic approach that integrates waste management and sustainable energy generation, steering Papua New Guinea toward a greener path.
Enhancing database management and fostering collaboration among various agencies was another key workshop focus. Efficient data sharing and cooperation among stakeholders are essential for effective decision-making in the WtE sector, ensuring that policies and initiatives are well-informed and impactful.
Whilst this recent capacity-building workshop in Papua New Guinea marks a significant milestone, the PAWES project has a broader reach. It actively collaborates with Samoa, Tuvalu, the Republic of Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea. The overarching goal is to empower these nations, ensuring they possess the knowledge and capability to make effective and efficient decisions regarding waste-to-energy solutions tailored to their unique contexts.
The PAWES project is implemented by the Pacific Community in close partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), the University of Papua New Guinea, the University of the South Pacific, national governments, civil society, and the private sector. It is financed with funding by the European Union with the support of the Secretariat of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States.
This support enables the project to catalyse positive change and promote sustainable practices in the Pacific.
