This week the representatives from the Pacific Community (SPC) will join over 5000 ocean specialists from across the globe for the 2022 Ocean Sciences Meeting. Held every 2 years, the gathering is one of the largest and most significant events on the scientific calendar, and a key forum for exploring the health sustainability and future of our oceans.

As the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific, SPC is well represented in this year’s edition. A dozen of SPC scientists and subject-matter experts will showcase our unique expertise on marine organisms, climate hazards assessment, ocean acidification, and recent innovations in Pacific Island Countries and Territories. Over five presentations, SPC will share research and findings from across the Pacific with the global ocean science community, including in depth analysis from the waters of Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, and Fiji.

Dr. Jerome Aucan, Head of the Pacific Community Centre for Ocean Science (PCCOS) highlighted the key role this meeting plays in knowledge sharing and networking within the scientific community, “Conferences and science events are crucial to exchange information and find other researchers to collaborate with. These events allow us to listen to new ideas and approaches to solve problems that Pacific Islanders are facing in their day-to-day life.”

SPC is a key source of high-quality scientific information for the Pacific. Its expertise in fisheries science and geoscience is recognised worldwide. The organization’s work in ocean science is coordinated through PCCOS, which partners with regional and international organizations on ocean science, knowledge, and information in the Pacific.

SPC’s participation in the Ocean Sciences Meeting was made possible with the financial support of the New Zealand Government through the Pacific Community Centre for Ocean Science (PCCOS).
