New Caledonia is a French territory located in the South Pacific region. Melanesians form the largest segment of the population, and the remaining population is a melting pot of people and cultures, including European, Tahitian, Indonesian, Vietnamese and others. Similar to other parts of the Pacific, Kanak cultural communities live in tribes that are governed by a Chiefly system.
