Today is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, with the theme, “Leaving no one behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract”. Indigenous people are the holders of unique languages, knowledge systems and beliefs. They also possess unique and invaluable knowledge of practices for the sustainable management of natural resources in their deep connection to land, sea and sky.
SPC joins the call to redesign a new social contract as an expression of cooperation for social interest and common good for humanity and nature ensuring Indigenous peoples’ right to participate in decision-making is key in achieving reconciliation between indigenous peoples and states. No one, including indigenous peoples, should be left behind.
