Green News: Sea Women of Melanesia, international heroes for climate action

Noumea

In Papua New Guinea, Sea Women of Melanesia monitor the health of coral reefs and create and restore marine protected areas. The NGO is composed of women trained by professional divers to safeguard coral reefs under threat from climate change.

As women play a crucial role in the management, conservation, exploitation and utilization of natural resources, Sea Women of Melanesia are a source of inspiration to achieve gender equality in science. By combining indigenous knowledge and science, the organization also aims to offer a way forward on some complex environmental challenges.

Sea Women of Melanesia recently have been recognized as United Nations Champions of the Earth Award 2021. Previously, were awarded the Ocean Tribute Award at Boot Duesseldorf 2020 and the Blue Marine Foundation Ocean Award for the "Local Hero" category, 2021.
